I have not spent a lot of time thinking about the Nike slogan over the years, but, as I was reading about its history, I was reminded that sometimes you really do need to “just do it.” Although it may not be perfect, if you wait for perfect, it most likely will never get done.
I once attend a meeting where Larry Winget, a fellow professional speaker, held up a book and said, “See this book? It is not very good, but it is better than the one you haven’t written.”
That weekend I pulled out the list of great interviewing questions I had collected over the years and created a booklet of 150 of the best and took it to my printer. In just two weeks, I sold over 200 copies at $10.00 each. While that first booklet was not perfect, it was a lot better than the one I never wrote!
Today that booklet has evolved into an honest-to-goodness book entitled 267 Hire Tough Proven Interviewing Questions. But, if I had never done the first one, odds are I would never have done all of the other books and booklets that followed.
That’s why Nike’s slogan resonates over the years — sometimes, ready or not, you have to “JUST DO IT.”
