Hiring Wisdom: Lessons About Workplace Strategy, Age, and Experience

Recently, my 8 year old granddaughter challenged me to a game of Blokus, a strategy game for two players.

I had never played before, but the game is quite simple. Note, I did not say easy, but the directions say it only takes a minute to learn the basics.

Well. I have to tell you my granddaughter won the first three games and not because I let her. Then I noticed there was section called “Strategy Tips” with six very simple tips for winning on the instruction sheet.

I asked Taylor if she had read the tips and she laughed and said: “Of course I have; that’s why I keep beating you.” Once I read the tips, I beat her the next three games.

Two lessons learned:

  1. When it comes to games and to business, take the time to think about a winning strategy.
  2. Age and experience have advantages, but only when all else is equal.
